Adventure-lovers: this one’s for you! Your day starts with a meeting with your local guide, who’ll equip you with thermal overalls and helmets and get you ready for the adventure ahead. Then, on a modified Superjeep, you and your family will venture into the beautiful, barren landscapes of the glacier world towards the edge of Myrdalsjokull glacier.
From there, you’ll find your snowmobiles, and after a thorough safety briefing and training, you’ll start your ride onto the staggering ice-sheet of the glacier. From an altitude of 800 meters, you’ll head along the glacier flow of Solheimajokull glacier tongue with your guide, and up to an impressive altitude of 1,400 meters.
Iceland is known as the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ due to its unique contrast of having powerful volcanic stations covered by massive glaciers. Your snowmobile ride takes you along the caldera of one of these powerful volcanoes, Katla, which lies dormant under the glacier. From here, you and your little ones can enjoy stunning panoramic views across the south coast, and towards the islands of Vestmannaeyjar.
See moreThe trip may be gently, but the age limit to take part in the activity is 5 years old. The snowmobiles will need to be driven by adults who hold a valid driver’s license, meaning that children will need to sit on the back of their parents’ snowmobiles.
The snowmobiling tour is available all year-round, but the best time to do it is between April and October.
The activity costs $311 per adult, and $218 per child (under the age of 11), on the basis of two riders per snowmobile.
The operator and guide will provide you and your family with warm overall suits, balaclavas, mittens, and safety helmets. We advise you to wear warm layers and a fleece layers underneath the suit, though, to avoid getting cold. It can also be very bright out on the glacier with the light reflecting off the ice, so sunglasses and sunscreen are a must!
