Situated between Ahipara and Dargaville, Waipoua Forest is a primary sub-tropical forest, famous for its giant kauris, New Zealands iconic trees. A winding, narrow mountain road will take you into the heart of the forest, where you'll find the small 'Tane Mahuta Walk', a trail that leads to largest kauri in the country. Having been over exploited for its wood, kauri trees are now a protected species. Along the road you'll see lots of signs pointing out trails of different lengths, each one leading into the forest where you'll see not only these emblematic trees but also another endemic species, the Rimus. During my walk along these trails I managed to photograph several superb ferns, the All Blacks national rugby team's emblem and an unforgettable sight during my <a href="/new-zealand/">trip to New Zealand.</a> If you head further north, make sure you visit The Labyrinth Woodworks and Maze Museum, dedicated to one of New Zealanders' favorite pastimes. If you get car sick, this will give you a fun break - personally I really enjoyed it.
