Malaysia is a surprising country in every way. And the cluster of lakes linked to one another that go by the name of Tasik Chini will definitely live up to expectations! If this is not the case, then maybe the lake's monster will leave you speechless; rumour has it that it haunts the depths!

To be honest, Kota Bharu was not my favourite town in Malaysia. It does have some museums and temples you can visit, but, as far as I'm concerned, there's no need to hang around. The Thai border is only a few kilometres to the north, so Kota Bharu is on a crossroads for people travelling in the region. You're best off touring its surrounds or heading out to the stunning islands. You should visit the Perenthian Islands, which are two tiny isles off the coast. You can get there by taking a bus to Kuala Besut Jetty followed by a boat to Kecil, if you're after a young, party feel, or Besar, if you're on a family break. My advice if you're travelling with your family!
