A city located next to the sea in Mauritius, and lying at the foot of two mountains, Port Louis presents a very beautiful landscape of jagged, mountainous scenery. Despite its modern aspect, with its high-rise buildings, this capital city has managed to retain something of its traditional authenticity, with typical creole houses to be found at various places along its streets. Where the city's various museums are concerned, I particularly liked the Blue Penny Museum, which showcases and celebrates the heritage of Mauritius. Additionally, the Mauritians themselves are some of the most friendly, warm and welcoming people you are likely to encounter. When staying in Mauritius, I recommend going for a walk by the sea along the famous Caudan Waterfront, which is home to a large number of shops and restaurants. To avoid the busy crowds you can often encounter there in the afternoon, however, the best time to visit and take a look around is in the late afternoon or early evening. I personally prefered going instead to the vibrant, bustling central market in the daytime, with all its local colours, flavours and aromas. Another place to visit is the Champ de Mars, home to the oldest horse racing course in the entire Indian Ocean region. Finally, and for the chance to enjoy some great views out over the whole of Port Louis, I paid a visit to Fort Adelaide, which stands looking out over the city and provides a particularly impressive panoramic vantage point. One minor negative point however: I found the organisation of the island to be a little too much tourist-oriented at times, and the lagoon was unfortunately not as beautiful as I'd hoped.
