I was really taken with the quiet, peaceful little village of Kato Zakros , with its handful of traditional stone houses, its warm, friendly and welcoming inhabitants, and its taverns serving local specialities made from good quality regional produce. A tiny hamlet that has managed to retain its old-world charm, it's a wonderfully relaxing place to visit.
Kato Zakros' most impressive feature is its splendid bay. The area is renowned for its glorious panoramic views: the village's inhabitants will tell you that it has the most beautiful wild scenery to be found anywhere on Crete, with its olive trees and its wonderful long pebble beach.
If you are a fan of archaeological sites, pay a visit to the Minoan palace, which lies just a stone's throw from the beach. This is the last of the four Minoan palaces to have been discovered on Crete. Constructed around 1450 BC, it extends over an area of two acres and originally contained approximately 100 rooms. I particularly recommend taking a look at the northeast courtyard, where the ruins of the royal apartments are located, and the west wing, with its 'lustral basin'.
