Preveli monastery is located in rocky gorges. A relentless wind blows in the hair and clothes of the visitors. Like almost everywhere in Crete, you can practically feel the old resistance to the Turks. The monastery was a refuge for soldiers on several occasions during the Cretan wars, and the monks took great risks by putting their lives in danger to protect them.
If you visit Kato Preveli (Piso Preveli is inaccessible), you'll come across a museum with ancient ecclesiastical relics, but to be honest I didn't find it particularly interesting. Nevertheless, the place has breathtaking views and you can learn a lot about its history, so I'd highly recommended visiting.
