Some say that Porto-Vecchio is to Corsica what Saint-Tropez is to the Côte d'Azur. It's true that the town and its surrounding area bring in a significant part of the island's tourist influx, and there's a reason for this. It's one of the loveliest towns and its nearby coast is home to some of the most idyllic beaches you'll see during <a href="/corsica/">your trip to Corsica</a>. Located on a slight, rocky headland, the town is overlooked by the Ospedale Massif and towers above a large bay which provides a gorgeous setting. I particularly liked strolling along the banks and cafes, still with one foot in the town and with all the time in the world to contemplate the sea. Then I headed towards the old town and the Genoese citadel, with a more austere atmosphere, but without a doubt, more authentic. La Porte Génoise (The Genoese Gate) or the Bastion de France give a good idea of what the town used to be like.
