While on my trip to Rwanda , I found my stop in Gisenyi very pleasant and has left me with only happy and postive memories. There is a sort of holiday feel to the place. The view of the lake is not only pleasing to the eye, but also a good way to relax if you go for a swim (yes this is actually possible, so do take advantage!) Most hotels have a small private beach, but in town you will also find a stretch of sand open to all. It is rimmed with small bars and has a good lively atmosphere.
Some of the accommodation is charming and affordable. Like me, you will love waking up and having breakfast on the waterfront. There are some very good restaurants at Rubavu which will actually give you a chance to taste "sambazas", the famous small fried fish, a true delicacy!
A ride by boat or small craft is a great activity for everyone. This enables you to enjoy the infinite stretch of the lake while you gaze out at the scenery on the shore and watch the fishermen fish, which has a strong foothold in this region of Rwanda.
