Chichen Itza is an old Mayan town on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. It is wonderfully well preserved. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the 7 new wonders of the world. What else can I say!
My suggestion:
Get up very early. On the one hand, you will avoid the hordes of visitors, and on the other, you will enjoy the fabulous sunrise over the pyramid. So beautiful! Also, don't try to save money here, employ a guide. I guarantee he will give you chills!
My review
This place is incredibly rich. The ruins, if you can call them that, because they are exceptionally well preserved, date from the 10th century. At the time it was a very important religious center. It was built not far from two "cenotes", lakes which are virtually subterranean. Its exact origins are mysterious and the site itself has a very mysterious air. It's quite disturbing when you are there. You find yourself asking dozens of questions - how did they build such big buildings, what happened during the sacrifices, how did they decide on such a complicated calendar...
Chichen Itza leaves you speechless.
