The expedition to Yaxchilan and Bonampak remains one of my fondest memories of my trip to Mexico.
You get to the area after quite a long but exciting boat trip, with a lush jungle on one side and Guatemala on the other. The boats are not big, they are similar to motorised canoes, which adds to the adventure. The archaeological complexity is revealed slowly when crossing the forest. Yaxchilan is definitely less impressive than many other temples but its unique atmosphere which prevailed really charmed me. The ruins appearing in the middle of nowhere with trees invading the space, which soar up right in the middle of stairs, take you back in time.
I felt very cut off from the world, trying to understand the structure and to recognise the different divinities engraved in the rock. Everything had quite a captivating an air of archaeological discovery. In addition, the geographical location of the temple enable you to observe monkeys which jump around from branch to branch.
