Perched on a hill, Thikse displays the traditional architecture of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries that you will see during your trip to India. It's ancient paintings are surprising - some are reminiscent of cave paintings - and you can admire a silver stupa. It is also possible to climb to the roof to have a clear view of Leh and the surrounding mountains.
The highlight of the visit still remains the 14 metre high Buddha, two storeys tall. This gives the visitor the impression of plunging into its depths.
Travellers come in numbers at dawn to attend the Puja (ceremony) at Thikse . But visiting the building later in the morning when it is quieter enables you to talk to the monks. I had the chance to question them about the difference between Tibetan Buddhism and Zen Buddhism.
