The road you travel along to get to Gangotri is absolutely superb: extensive pine forests, turbulent rivers, little hidden waterfalls and temples lost amid the greenery.. The best option, in my opinion, is to travel around the area by bike. Watch out for the turns however, some of which are extremely sharp!
Hindu pilgrims come here to pray at the site of what they consider to be the true source of the Ganges, the most sacred river in the whole of India.
If, when visiting India, you want to see the origin of this legendary river, you will need to continue climbing up for a further 16 km from the Gangotri Temple. This will take you on a walk through a magnificent mountain landscape before you eventually arrive at Gaumukh, located at an altitude of 4225 m. This is the historic site of the Ganges' origin.
