Day 1: Welcome to Sri Lanka

I Negombo "Ayubowan" - is the local word for hello. You will be greeted by your driver as you start your journey towards Negombo which lies close to the airport. Here you will be able to relax and stretch your legs from the long flight.Please note that check-in is at 2:00 PM and based on availability the hotel will try and provide you with a room earlier.

Day 2: The ancient ruins of Negombo and Anuradhapura

After breakfast you will continue your journey towards Anuradhapura, the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka and part of the cultural triangle. The sacred city of Anuradhapura, now in picturesque ruins, was once a major center of Sri Lankan civilization. The fascinating ancient ruins include huge bell-shaped stupas built of small sun-dried bricks, temples, sculptures, palaces, and ancient drinking-water reservoirs. One of the most sacred relics for Buddhists all over the world, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya was brought to the country by Sanghamitra Thera and was planted by the then reigning monarch, King Devanampiyatissa.

Furthermore, you will get to visit Mihintale, which is believed to be the site of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa that inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The temple of Mihintale how now become one of the most important pilgrimage sites amongst Buddhist.

Day 3: Make the most of Jaffna

You will head around 10:30 to the train station of Anuradhapura and head by train towards the north of the country, Jaffna. Once you arrive you will have the opportunity to mix and mingle in the Tamily city. You will visit the impressive Kandasway Temple, which is the religious center of the North. If you wish you can also visit the library, the Jaffna Museum and the 17th century Dutch Fort. Admire the contracts between the colonial past and the uprising spirit of the local people, which gives the city a very special flair.

Day 4: The Island of Nainativu

After a very early breakfast, you will head out to Kurikadduwan located in the middle of the western peninsula. As you drive from the mainland to the small island, you will be able to observe fishermen sailing on catamarans and throwing out their nets. Your boat will be slightly swaying back and forth as you make your way to the island of Nainativu, where you will get to see the famous Naagadeepa Temple. The associated Stupa Rajayathana is one of the holiest sites of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Afterwards you will go to the remote island of Delft where you can enjoy your picnic lunch. Around you, the tall Palmyra palm trees stretch up and with a lot of luck you can catch a glimpse of the herds of wild ponies that gallop across the island. Afterwards you will head by ferry back to Jaffna.

Day 5: Visit the hindu temples of Keerimale

Today you will be driving to the northern coast of Jaffna Peninsula. On the way you will pass hundreds of dilapidated houses that are wildly overgrown by trees. They are the last silent witnesses to the expulsions during the almost thirty years of the war, which ended in 2009. Also all around our destination, the Hindu temple in Keerimale, you can still see traces of the civil war - be it bullet holes in the palm trees or a shipwreck that protrudes from the sea on the coast. In the vicinity of the temple, you can take a dip in the sacred basin while the sea rushes in the background or watch the other visitors.

​Afterwards, visit the temple in the small port of Dambakolaputn before returning to Jaffna. In the afternoon you can explore the city on your own.

Day 6: Meet the local fishermen

Your tour around the north of Sri Lanka takes you to the norhtermost point of Sri Lanka: "Point Pedro". While it was much used for import and export during pre – and colonial times, fishermen are now mianly to be found here. Afterwards, you will continue to the east coast of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee. At the hotel you can relax the rest of the day.

Day 7: The colonial remains of Sri Lanka

Trincomalee Today, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast before you visit Trincomalee. First you drive to the old portuguese fort, which today is used as an army camp. Thus, a part of the fort is closed as a high security zone. You will continue walking and with some luck you might see deer walking around the famous Hindu temple Koneshwarama Kovil. On the site of today's temple, 130 meters above sea level, one of the most magnificent temple buildings in Asia with one thousand pillars was once said to have stood. Afterwards you will return back to your hotel where you can relax for the next 5 days.

Day 8: Trincomalee sightseeing

Day 9: The Koneshwarama Kovil temple

Day 10: The Swami rock well known as the Lovers Leap

Day 11: The amazing Polonnaruwa landscapes

After an early breakfast, you will travel to the ancient sacred city of Polonnaruwa, which was the capital of Sri Lanka in the 11th and 12th centuries. In its heyday, the 6km of city walls housed hundreds of people. You will see the Gal Vihara Rock Sculptures and the three giant stone sculptures of the Buddha that were carved in granite by an unknown sculptor in the 12th century. This tour you will do by bicycle, which will make it more enjoyable as the ancient site stretches for a couple of km's. Please note that as the driver will keep moving the vehicle to various spots you will have to follow him and then park your bicycle in the various cultural spots where your guide will then join you to explain the sites.

​Lunch will be served Priyamali Gedera. This is a family run restaurant and you will be able to truly see an authentic way of how Sri Lankan kitchen is still cooked. The ingredients used are all from near by areas and often cooked over an open fire, creating those rich flavours. As you enjoy the delicious meal you will overlook the beautiful green rice paddy fields.

Afterwards you go on a game drive to Minneriya National Park. This park is known for the large number of elephant herds that live here in their natural habitat. This is really a great experience. Do not forget your camera. Rest of the day you will enjoy at leisure.

Day 12: The breathtaking temples of Dambulla

After breakfast you will visit the famous Sigiriya Rock, another Unesco World Heritage Site, a 370-meter granite rock with a magnificent palace that was built around 475 AD by King Kashyapa. It is a wonder of ancient engineering, art and culture. Once you reach the plateau you are faced with breathtaking views of the surrounding area. From there you can enjoy some lunch if you wish before visiting the well-known Dambulla Cave Temple another Unesco World Heritage Site. The caves’ history dates back to the 1st century BC, when King Walagamba, defeated at Anuradhapura, took refuge in one for 14 years. When he regained the throne, he turned five of the caves into shrines. The rest of the day you can enjoy at leisure.

Day 13: Relax day in Negombo

Today you will head back towards your starting point, Negombo. Here you can just relax the rest of the day and have one last swim in the Indian Ocean and perhaps do some shopping for family and friends back home.

Day 14: Return flight

Time to say goodbye. Today is your last day in Sri Lanka. You will be picked up and taken to the airport based on your flight information. Please note that check-out is at 12:00pm.
