It's a South African classic - a decorated ostrich egg. Beautifully painted, these eggs are surprisingly resistant and can support 100 kilos without cracking! Give it a try!
Jewelry and precious stones are much cheaper here than in the UK, so take advantage! However, if you want to buy a diamond, be careful, as you should only do so from a registered diamond dealer. Buying on the black market is illegal!
During your trip to South Africa, you'll come across lots of crafts from different ethnic traditions. You'll be able to bring home a range of souvenirs and presents. Coloured pearl items are a favourite and you can also pick up quality leatherwear, including accessories made from ostrich leather. Kids will love the carved, wooden animals - zebras, giraffes, crocodiles... You're going to have trouble fitting it all into your suitcase!
South Africans produce other great souvenirs such as scarves, mohair shawls and ostrich feather boas. And at teatimes pour some Rooibos tea! With some dry mango or pineapple treats on the side. You could also bring back a World Cup t-shirt!
