Transfer to Sergiev Posad for a guided tour of the heart of the Russian orthodox religion and the home of Russia’s patriarch, built around the Holy Trinity Monastery.
Lunch in a local restaurant before continuing into the Russian countryside to Suzdal for dinner.
With its Kremlin, market stalls, monasteries and countless little churches, Suzdal is museum city that has hardly changed in over 250 years, and on every corner 'medovukha' is sold: an ancient Russian drink (a sort of honey beer).
After lunch in a local restaurant, travel to Vladimir, a medieval capital of Russia. During the guided tour, visit the Cathedral of St Demetrius, as well as UNESCO-protected Assumption Cathedral and the Golden Gates. Transfer back to Moscow.
A city centre walking tour takes you to Moscow’s major cultural and historical points.
You will see one of the famous 'Seven Sisters' skyscrapers, Lubyanka Square, and Teatralnaya Square next to the Bolshoi Theatre.
Discover one of the masterpieces of the Soviet era: the Moscow Metro. Decorated with marble, mosaics, stained-glass panels and bronze sculptures, it looks more like a vast art museum.
Arguably one of the most famous squares in the world, each building here is legendary: the brightly-domed St Basil's cathedral, the Lenin Mausoleum, the expansive façade of the GUM department store, Kazan Cathedral and the Kremlin towers.
Next, discover the interior of the Kremlin. Cathedral Square retains the aura of early Tsarist Russia, where the spirits of Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov and the early Romanovs loom large.
An overnight train takes you to Novgorod in 1st Class.
Novgorod the Great is one of the oldest towns in Russia, founded in the 9th Century. The Kremlin here is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and contains the oldest palace in Russia. Enjoy a guided tour around Yaroslav's Courtyard.
On to the UNESCO-protected Yuriev (St George's) Monastery, on the banks of the Volkhov River.
Vitoslavlitsy Museum of Wooden Architecture exhibits over 20 wooden buildings dating back to the 14th-19th Centuries.
Train to St Petersburg. Unlike the busy capital, it is peaceful and unhurried, just like a real museum-city should be. A guided city tour by car takes you around the stunning 'Venice of the North.' See the Peter and Paul Fortress, St Isaac's Cathedral, and the Church of Christ's Resurrection.
You will also see the famous cruiser Aurora, whose canon signalled, on the order of Lenin, the beginning of the revolution.
Enjoy a guided tour of the Hermitage, former residence of the Russian Tsars and one of the best museums in the world. The stunning palace contains over 3,000,000 works of art representing world culture and art from the Stone Age to the 20th Century. It includes works by Da Vinci, Titian, Raphael, French impressionists, sculptures and treasured icons, coins and Tsars’ jewellery.
