Travel in Peru

On these pages you will find ideas for a trip to Peru to help you prepare for your trip. All these ideas are there just to get your imagination going; you can alter, mix and match them as you please. Your local agent will help you create a unique and unforgettable trip, just for you! Peru has three distinct parts, each with its own character: the Pacific coast, which is the most densely populated; the Andes range, with the highest mountain being the towering Huascarán at 6,768 metres; and the Amazon, which covers the largest part of the country. If you’re going, start with the must-see: Machu Picchu – fortunately not found by the Conquistadors – rediscovered in 1911. You should visit it at dawn to see the ruins shrouded in mist. This extraordinary site still clasps a few secrets to its bosom. Not far away, the Andes range draw ramblers and trekkers to magnificent landscapes. The ultimate rambling experience is the Inca Trail through exceptional archaeological sites. During your stay in Peru, you must stop in Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire. The Spanish erected their buildings, especially religious ones, over Inca constructions which they systematically destroyed, only sparing their characteristic foundations, which are still visible today with their large, perfectly cut and fitted stones. A voyage out of time awaits you in Cusco.

Guide to travelling in Peru

Does a trip to Peru tickle your fancy? Let’s continue our tour, then. Perhaps you might fulfil a childhood dream by going out on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at an altitude of 3,810 metres. According to legend, the lake gave birth to Manco Capác and his sister Mama Ocllo, who founded the Inca Empire. Colca Canyon, the second deepest in the world, has wonderful surprises in store for you – condors, overnight stays with locals, oases and spas: this world is your oyster! In Iquitos, the gateway to the Amazon, you will have other kinds of encounters: alligators, tarantulas, piranhas, oversized spiders and medicinal plants. If you are enchanted by nature, then you will be delighted to visit the Ballestas Islands, where you will be immersed in nature. They are also known as the Galapagos of Peru because they are an exceptional animal sanctuary. Nazca on the Pacific coast will enchant you with its giant ground drawings several millennia old. Showing animal, plant and human forms, some drawings span more than 100 metres. The mystery of their creation is how their artists managed to etch perfectly straight lines on uneven terrain, in some cases covering several kilometers. Not to mention the world-famous UNESCO heritage ancient city of Machu Picchu One thing is sure: if you make a trip to Peru, you will succumb to the charm of this unique country.

You can go to Peru at any time of year. In fact, the country's climate varies enormously across the regions. Choose the dry season, from December to March, to visit the coast. June to August or in mid-season is best for touring the Andes and September or November is best for a hike in the Amazon rainforest. You can climb the famous Machu Picchu and go down the Madre de Dios river by canoe in this colourful country with its huge number of tourist attractions.

I want to thank Jannik and the team at******************** for all your help with planning this trip. It was a fantastic experience. The hotels were great, very clean, very well situated. We especially enjoyed ******************, we sat in their garden and could not believe how incredibly beautiful it was, even the children raved about it. And their restaurant - the food was just as incredible. The drivers - Wilfredo & William - were both patient and friendly, which is needed with a group of our size and age range. The guides - Irving, Gino, Diana, Alexandra - they were all really good, friendly, knowledgeable. Irving, Diana, and Alexandra were all excellent with the little ones. But I do have to call out Alexandra - she was incredible, and we wished she was our guide for the balance of the trip. She was with us for three days, and by then, she was a natural member of the group. Overall we were all impressed with the drivers, guides, tours, and locations, and it was a fantastic experience for all of us, which is hard to do with a large group of 11 people with such a varied age range of 4 to 72. Once again, thank you and your team, as well as the drivers, guides, and all the different staff for making this an unforgettable and fantastic trip/experience.
