Arrival at Podgorica airport. A rental car will wait as you’ll head to your first accommodation in the capital. Evening to stroll around the numerous cafes and restaurants in the city center.
Optional: if morning flight, we would suggest a visit to a local winery, the host whose land was in the family for generations, and who brought it new shine and today produces a variety of red and white wines, internationally recognized and awarded. Degustation followed by some nice local delicatessen.
Today we head our journey towards the beautiful Kučke Mountains (Kučke Planine). Our destination is a mountain lake located at 1448m above sea level. Legends have been told of the fairies that seduced the shepherds who brought cattle to the lake in the past, but you will hear not just these legends, you will get to climb one beautiful peak at 1876m elevation on an easy circular tour with swimming in the lake as the reward at the end of the hike.
Afternoon drive to Skadar Lake area for accommodation at local hosts with delicious home made dinner to conclude the day.
Lake cruise (3h) coloured with water lilies and water caltrops which will landscape our way through a small jungle like channels on our way to the island monastery. Passing between “Goat and Sheep Islands”, we will reach the only sacred place in the Lake area, which was never destroyed and originates from the 15th century. Beautiful views of the Lake landscape, but also a quick sight of the tombs of the rulers who belonged to the Crnojevic dynasty, as well as some cattle kept by the monks of the monastery. Before we return, we will make a stop to enjoy some swimming.
Optional: kayaking in the afternoon or longer cruise with lunch in fishermen village.
From Skadar Lake direction north. First pay a visit to one of the greatest religious wonders in this part of Europe, monastery situated high in the cliffside, speaking of history and long Christian tradition in this region. After the visit on the way to a goat farm above Salt lake of Niksic stop for some photos of the lake and its numerous islands. At the farm your host will make sure you get to try variety of their products crowned with delicious lunch.
Niksic region hides some of the most breath-taking landscapes you can imagine, and today we are heading to discover one of those. In the area of brave shepherds and katuns, where summers are mild, but winters snowy and harsh, the hiking tour of another glacial lake will take place. Route will include mountains pastures, gorgeous nearby peaks but also a Captain’s lake, place of peace and serenity at 1678m of elevation, also rich with trout and if warm enough welcoming for swimming. Hike duration 3-5hours, depending on the pace, but an easy trail.
Suggestion to have a coffee at Krupac lake shore before heading to the airport for a farewell to Montenegrin lake story.
