Arrive in Mexico’s largest state, Chihuahua. This city is surrounded by mountains and the people are extremely welcoming. Meet your transfer at the airport and travel to your hotel which is situated in the centre of the historic district of the city
Explore the mysteries of Paquime, an archeological site in the north of Mexico which, at its height, was one of the largest, most complex settlements in the country and played a key role in trade movement across Mesoamerica. For years, archeologists have pondered over what happened to this incredible city. Explore the extensive remains and come to your own conclusions. Return to Chihuahua in the afternoon.
Rise early this morning in order to board your train at 6am. The early start is worth it as you can watch the sunrise over the mountains of the Copper Canyon from your train carriage. You will never tire of looking out at the incredible landscapes as you travel through the state of Chihuahua, Arrive in the afternoon in Creel, a magic town and the doorway to the incredible mountain range, the Sierra Tarahumara.
Today, visit the surroundings of Creel and meet the Raramuri women who make products by weaving straw. Stop by Lake Arareko and enjoy the beautiful view. Use this time to simply be and try some meditation. In the afternoon, travel through the Valle de los Monjes to serve an amazing landscape formed of rocks shaped like chimneys and frogs. Meet the Rarmuri people once more and join them at the San Sebastian cave to observe their handicrafts. Return to Creel at the end of the day.
Hop back on the El Chepe train and journey south through Chihuahua to Posada Barrancas where you will stay in the hotel Mirador. This is located at a point known as ‘el divisadero’, the divide. From your terrace, enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the Copper Canyon. It’s possible to take a walking tour of the surroundings and visit a Tarahumara cave.
Spend your day at leisure in the Copper Canyon. It’s possible to do some of the adrenaline-filled activities here such as ziplining and taking a cable car through the mountains. Alternatively, sit with a book on your terrace and take in the peace and quite which surrounds you. We promise you there’s no feeling quite like it.
After a leisurely morning in Posada Barrancas, take your final train journey and travel further south into the state of Sinaloa, to the colonial gateway to the Copper Canyon, El Fuerte. Check-in to your hotel and then take a wander around this sunny and colonial city. Explore some of the sites such as the Iglesia de Dolores, the Miguel Angel Morales Ibarra Community Museum or the ruins of an old Jesuit temple. This evening, enjoy some fresh food while listening to traditional music in one of the squares.
