Few people, of which I am the first, have heard about this island which holds so many treasures before. The younger sister of Mauritius, Rodrigues Island has no need to be jealous of its neighbour. Its beaches are magnificent, its lagoon exquisite, and its inhabitants are extremely welcoming. To top it off, it is a lot cheaper than Mauritius!
When I arrived, the quiet and restful atmosphere relaxed me immediately. Here you feel like you're in the Caribbean 20 years ago! Throughout my holiday on Rodrigues Island, a musical créole dialect soothed my ears while the tropical nature charmed my eyes. Without any worries you can walk anywhere at any time of night or leave your motorbike running while buying something in the many little stalls dotted along the roadside. The inhabitants are very friendly and crime is almost non-existent. A rarity!
Here's my piece of advice: the most beautiful walk on the island is along the pathway which leads from Pointe Cotton to Mourouk. Take an old local bus to get there, that will add to the escapism. All along the walk, you will switch between walking under the shade of the casuarinas and little secluded coves with turquoise water. I literally fell in love with Anse Ally cove with its colourful rowing boats which appear to "fly" on the clear sky blue water. The beach, covered in part by short grass shaded by the casuarinas, lightly slopes down towards the ocean. My paradise!
