An adorable little Bavarian town, Oberammergau is famous for its painted houses, theatre, traditional wood carvings and beautiful surroundings.

My suggestion:
You should know that during years that the play is performed (not until 2020), it is almost impossible to find accommodations in Oberammergau.
My review

Perfectly Bavarian in character , Oberammergauis located a few miles north of the largest winter sports resort in the region, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in an absolutely beautiful setting: coniferous forests cover the slopes of the beautiful surrounding mountains. The city centre is just as adorable as its surroundings, with its many wooden chalets, all covered with paintings replicating the region's traditional lifestyle or other funny designs. Inside the chalets you'll find many local craft boutiques with artisanal items such as carved wooden objects.

Yet, although the city centre is absolutely charming, the reason so many tourists come here is to visit the famous "Passion Play Theatre", where the Passion Play has been performed by the village's residents every year ending in a zero since the 17th century. They perform the story to thank the heavens for sparing them from the bubonic plague. It's an institution! A stop to make during a stay near the Austrian border.
