Road trip the coastal Ring Road

NatureIceland

Iceland is a relatively small country, making it possible to tour it in a few days and discover all of its treasures. The best way to experience Iceland is by taking a road trip along the Ring Road, also known as Route 1, which stretches for 828 miles. This route travels along the coast, passing through charming villages and mountain ranges. Take the wheel of an RV or equip yourself with a tent so you can make pitstops to camp along the way.

A must-see spot when traveling to Iceland is the volcanic Lake Mývatn, located in the north-east of the country. Here, you can admire the gigantic waterfalls and fumaroles that emanate from volcanoes, while the birds that inhabit this natural site swoop overhead. Explore the area by foot on a hike along the fjords. While some routes are a bit more challenging, there are many easygoing ones that occasional walkers can enjoy, too.

One of the country's most famed and longest fjords is Eyjafjörður, with its snow-capped mountains and its typical colorful houses, guaranteeing postcard-perfect scenes. We also suggest you stop by the town of Vík to witness the Reynisdrangar, which are striking basalt pillars that pierce through the sea of the black-sand beach. This image sums up the mysterious atmosphere that defines Iceland, a country of otherworldly landscapes doused in myth and legend.
