This 6-day guided nature and birding tour will take you through an amazing variety of habitats, from the Cloud forest to the unique Andean Paramos, at a whopping elevation of  3,962 m / 13,000 ft. Our main focus of course will be finding and observing the greatest number of endemic bird species to the north-west, including a dazzling array of Flycatchers, Tanagers, Hummingbirds, Antpitta and Antbirds, not to mention a luxuriant tropical flora and fauna.

Visited:
Quito

Day 2: Yanacocha Reserve

After breakfast, set off at 06:00 AM for Yanacocha, a private reserve located at the north-west of the Pichincha Volcano. We will start off by exploring the area and its large extensions of paramos dominated by chusquea and poaceae plant species. We will then follow the reserve main trail, trekking along the volcano edges and across Andean forest (look out for polylepis, fuchsias, melastomacae, orchids, bromeliads and many other types of epiphytes). In the afternoon, we will head towards the higher Tandayapa Valley, until we reach our next Lodge. After dinner, you will be invited to take a night walk. Dinner and night in comfortable Lodge.

Breakfast, Lunch and dinner included

Visited:
Yanacocha, Tandayapa

Day 3: Bellavista Reserve

Today will be dedicated to the Bellavista reserve. The higher part of this reserve is composed of a diverse cloud forest inhabited by huge tree ferns, reptiles, sloths, countless epiphyte plants, heliconias, amphibians and birds such as: Plate-Billed Mountain Toucan, Toucan Barbet, Masked Trogon, Streaked Tuftedcheek and Tanager Finch, a true festival of natural colours and wonders. We will reach the Mindo Valley in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay in a comfortable Lodge.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Visited:
Tandayapa, Sachatamia

Day 4: The Famous "Paz De Las Aves" Reserve

Departure at 5:00am, north-west. After a 40 min drive, we will arrive at a protected area called 'Paz de las Aves' reserve where we will visit the Cock of the Rock lek.If we are quiet enough, we will be able to witness the incredible nuptial dance of this colourful and unique bird of the Cotingidae family. On our way back, Angel Paz, the owner of the reserve, will demonstrate that with a tremendous amount of patience he has tamed four species of antpittas: Giant, Moustached, Ochre-breasted, Yellow-breasted, Scaled and Chestnut-crowned Antpitta and feeds them daily. After a traditional brunch, we will drive back to our Lodge.

In the afternoon, we will visit two reserves around the Milpe region made of dense subtropical foothill forests 1,100m / 3.609 ft high. We will be birding all afternoon on the trails that go across this endangered forest habitat. Dinner and overnight.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Visited:
Paz de las Aves, Sachatamia

Day 5: Silanche Reserve

Silanche Reserve is located next to the Milpe area, and is a unique area because the Andean slopes of subtropical forests are the home of slightly different population of birds: Choco Trogon, Choco Woodpecker, Esmeralds Antbird and Scarlet-browed Tanager. We will therefore spend the whole day exploring these woods in search of the species they hide. In the late afternoon we will drive back to our Lodge. Dinner and overnight.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner included

Visited:
Milpe, Sachatamia

Day 6: Back To Quito

In the early afternoon we will drive North, back to Quito, with a stopover at the Pululahua area to explore bamboo forests and try to spot the elusive Rusty-breasted Antpitta, the only population known in the whole country. Before noon, we will jump back in our vehicle to reach the inter-Andean valley where we will stop among the xerophytic vegetation to look for the rare White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant. We will arrive at Quito in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner included
