Before going to the Island of Chiloé, I went to the little German style town of Puerto Varas, in the heart of the Lake Region in Chile. It was in this village that I explored Lake Llanquihue. With a surface area of 800 km2Lake Llanquihue is the second largest lake in Chile, after Lake Carrera.
The staff in our hotel recommended going along the southern shore of the lake to have the best view of Osorno volcano and the surrounding forests. Alongside Lake Llanquihue we saw some fishermen and canoeists. The beaches of black sand on the edges of the water are perfect for a little siesta or a picnic.
We didn't have the time to get to Ensenada nor to Puerto Octay where our hosts had recommended we rent a little cabin on the lake shore. But we will defnitely do it another time! You can also go as far as the Petrohué waterfalls which are about 60 km from Puerto Varas.
