Explore a little known province that's a bit off the tourist trail, but definitely worth your while.
Situated in what is known as the Prairies, the province of Manitoba isn't top of the list for visitors during a trip to Canada. It's a shame, because if they knew what they were missing, they'd quickly change their minds!
Manitoba is defined by its indigenous cultures and living off the land. You'll find a vast, flat landscape that disappears into the horizon and enjoy its calm, rural environment. Crossing Manitoba by bus or car is a meditative experience if ever there was. It's also a place where you can immerse yourself in local, indigenous cultures. The Ojibwas and Assiniboine people still live here, giving you a taste of what life in Canada was like before the white colonists arrived…
And whilst you're there you should pay Winnipeg, the capital, a visit. Even if the town lacks a certain charm, it still has some interesting attractions, including festivals, museums and lovely parks. Winnipeg is a bit like Manitoba in general, a place you need to explore and get to know; once you do you'll feel right at home!
Ifyour trip to Canada is about seeking out atypical places, then Churchill is one you shouldn't miss out! Cut off from the rest of the world, only accessible by a long train journey, it appeals to tourists who want to spot a legendary furry beast - polar bears, who are even known to wander the streets!
Being in a Nordic climate, the weather is harsh to say the least. But there are loads of activities on offer - hikes, ski-doo rides, ice fishing…Just bear in mind that unlike the rest of the Prairies, you need to book in advance; amenities are limited in number and it can be a costly experience!
Manitoba and the Prairies: take your time to explore the province!
