Argentina is a vast country with diverse terrain that spans glaciers, mountains, jungles, and beaches. It's one of South America's Argentina top adventure travel destinations. Come to trek across glaciers in Patagonia, ride horses through the Andean foothills, or climb the rock faces of El Chaltén.

What makes Argentina a great destination for adventure travel?

Argentina is one of the largest countries in the world, covering more than a million square miles. The variety of landscapes here makes adventure trips in Argentina some of the best the continent has to offer, whether you are hiking around the world-famous Iguazú waterfalls or mountain biking across the enchanting landscapes of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. What’s more, the wildlife spotting is superb. You may encounter sea lions and elephant seals as they dive in the Valdes Peninsula, or watch penguins waddle around the Puerto Deseado.

The best adventure activities in Argentina

From hiking over glaciers to rafting down river rapids, these are the best adventures to experience in Argentina.

Trek across glaciers in Patagonia

Argentina is one of the few countries where you can get up close to active glaciers. The most popular spot for trekking is the Glacier Perito Moreno, located in El Calafate. This glacier has a surface area of 97-square miles and is the third-largest reserve of fresh water on Earth.

Ride horses in the Andean Foothills

What could be more adventurous than exploring the second-highest mountain range in the world on horseback? Stay in an estancia, typical Argentinian ranch commonly found in the Andes region, and you can ride horses among the stunning landscapes of the Andes foothills.

Hit the slopes in Tierra del Fuego

Although skiing in Argentina isn’t yet mainstream, the country does offer a few excellent powdery slopes. Check out Cerro Castor in Tierra del Fuego, where there are more than 20 miles of slopes to explore. The main skiing season in the mountain resorts is from June to October

Go rock climbing in El Chaltén

Sitting on the borders of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, the mountain village of El Chaltén is a great spot for rock climbers of all abilities. There plenty of options for mountaineering in this area, ranging from short basic routes to multi-day excursions.

Take a Hike around Iguazú Falls

The impressive Iguazú Falls sits on the border between Argentina and Brazil and is famed as one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The surrounding national park can be explored via a network of walkways and footpaths that lead to viewing platforms. Make sure to allow at least a few hours to explore and see the majestic falls from every angle possible.

Argentina is a huge country, so the climate varies from region to region. To the northeast, the climate is sub-tropical, whilst the central region is humid and the south the coldest. The best time to visit the country is between March and April and October/November; it's best to avoid the glacial cold that can affect the south, the heatwaves that hit the north and the rainy season. The lovely Buenos Aires is best visited during the Argentinian Spring, which is during the European Autumn, as the weather is pleasant. If you're planning to hike in Patagonia, any time of year will do!
