Salinas Grandes is one of Argentina's "picture postcard" spots - a paradise of white at an altitude of 3,350 m. These salt flats are between Purmamarca and San Antonio de los Cobres in Jujuy province.

My suggestion:
Arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid most of the visitors. Scenery like this is best enjoyed in silence and alone.
My review

Getting to Salinas Grandes is an adventure. It's an hour and half's journey from Purmamarca which is 1,000 m lower down. I remember the precipitous Cuesta de Lipan, a 30 km long pass with very tight bends. The road tops out at 4,170 metres. I have a very special memory of it.

But the arrival at the salt flats surpassed our expectations. An immense expanse of white, occasionally covered with a fine film of water in the rainy season. Workmen in overalls that cover them completely while they are working the "white gold". Unequalled purity. A must see duringyour stay in North West Argentina.

Salinas Grandes is also a place for comic photos for travellers who like playing with perspective! Be creative!
